UK Appoints Top War Crimes Lawyer to Help Ukraine in War Crimes Probe Against Russia

United Kingdom Attorney General Suella Braverman has appointed a leading war crimes lawyer to advise Ukraine over the Russian invasion.

Braverman said on March 28 that Sir Howard Morrison will act as an Independent Adviser to Ukrainian Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova to provide legal advice in relation to the investigation of war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine.

Sir Morrison will begin his work immediately, according to a government statement.

The UK government added that Sir Morrison and Venediktova are in regular contact and hope to meet in person in April.

“The UK is committed to showing that the atrocities we see being committed day after day in Ukraine will not be forgotten and that those giving or following illegal orders will be tracked down and held to account,” Braverman said.

Venediktova said Ukraine was “honored” and she was “grateful” for the appointment.

“Sir Howard’s experience and knowledge of international criminal law speaks louder than words and his help will be taken up immediately on a number of issues,” Venediktova said.

Sir Morrison served at the International Criminal Court for over 12 years and was involved in the most serious of crimes of international concern, according to the UK government.
