Turkish Court Issues Arrest Warrant against Semra Guzel over Terrorism Charges

A Turkish court issued an arrest warrant on Friday for Semra Guzel, a lawmaker from the ranks of the People’s Democracy Party (HDP) whose immunity was lifted over two separate charges, but refused to appear before the court for clarification.

Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office said that Guzel rejected for testimony to answer serious allegations of terrorism charges against her.

The parliament lifted Guzel’s immunity on March 1 in order to pave the way for the judicial organs to open inquiry after Guzel’s photos with PKK terrorist emerged.

According to prosecutor’s office, Guzel is accused of supporting terrorism and being a member of a terror organization, an allegation Guzel rejects it completely.

Turkish security forces killed Volkan Bora, a PKK terrorist in April 2017 in the southeastern province of Mardin. “During investigation and searching of Bora’s phone, the police found pictures of Guzel and Bora together which were taken in a PKK camp in northern Iraq,” the prosecutor’s office said.

Guzel will be removed as a lawmaker post if she is convicted of terrorism charges.

The People’s Democracy Party has been accused of having links with the PKK, according to Daily News. “The Constitutional Court continues to investigate an indictment by the prosecutor, which calls for shutting down the HDP for its links with the PKK and banning more than 500 politicians,” it added.

Last week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey is committed to eliminating all sorts of terrorism that claimed the lives of thousands of people over the past 40 years.

Erdogan also said that Turkish forces routinely conduct military strikes in Iraq’s north, targeting rear bases that PKK terrorists have used to wage their decades-long insurgency.

Erdogan furthered went on saying that terrorism and terrorism-supported politics have no place in Turkey.
