Jamaican Prime Minister Informs The Royal Couple That Jamaica Intends to Pursue Independence

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness has informed Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge that the British commonwealth aspires to become totally independent.

The royal couple, who stood on either side of Holness when he made the news, gave only a couple of quick head bobs in response.

The announcement came as the Royal couple visited Jamaica as part of their tour of the Caribbean, the couple’s first since the pandemic began two years ago.

“We are moving on,” Holness said, adding that “We intend to fulfill our true ambitions and destiny as an independent, developed, prosperous country.”

Carla Gullotta, director of Stand Up for Jamaica, expressed her thoughts on the announcement, “I did not know that the prime minister was going to say what he said today. I think it is a very important step forward.”

Stand Up for Jamaica is a non-profit human rights organization that signed a letter requesting an apology and compensation from Britain.

For more than 300 years, Britain governed Jamaica, compelling hundreds of thousands of African slaves to toil in harsh conditions.

When Barbados broke ties with Queen Elizabeth II in November, Jamaica would become only the second Caribbean country to follow suit in recent years.
