President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of attacking Ukraine with phosphorus bombs during his NATO address.
“This morning we had phosphorus bombs from Russia, people were killed, children were killed,” Zelenskyy said in an address to NATO members gathered for an emergency summit in Brussels.
President Joe Biden previously warned that the possibility of Russia using chemical weapons was a “real threat.”
Biden also previously stated that the United States believed Russia was falsely accusing Ukraine of using biological or chemical weapons in order to justify its own attack on the country.
Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin’s spokesman, has refused to rule out the prospect of Russia using nuclear weapons in battle.
According to Human Rights Watch, white phosphorus munitions “act in the same way as incendiary weapons” by “starting fires and causing burns” with the capacity to spread fire over a large area.
