The worsening crisis situation in Sri Lanka has forced six refugees to leave their homeland and illegally enter India by boat on Tuesday.
In a tweet, the Indian Coast Guard said it has apprehended six Sri Lankan nationals near Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu while trying to illegally enter the country.
There were two females, three children, and one male who, according to a report by The Indian Express, attempted to land at Dhanushkodi but were disembarked midway and left stranded at a sand dune by the man who brought them there.
In an interview with members of the Indian media, one of the refugees shared that high prices of all commodities have forced them to migrate.
The Sri Lankan refugees were handed over to the Coastal Security Group, Mandapam for further legal proceedings.
