Russian Cosmonauts Arrive at ISS Wearing Ukrainian Colors

Russian cosmonauts Denis Matveyev, Oleg Artemyev and Sergey Korsakov arrived at the International Space Station on Friday wearing flight suits with colors that match the Ukrainian flag.

The cosmonauts were seen wearing standard plain blue Russian uniforms before launch.

The Russian Soyuz capsule arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) after a three-hour flight which departed from a Russian launch facility in Kazakhstan. They new arrivals were welcomed on board by their fellow American, Russian and German crew members

The ISS is a joint project between Russia, America, Canada, Japan and European countries. It has continued for more than twenty years despite sometimes tense relations between the world powers.

The three cosmonauts are the first new arrivals since Russia invaded its eastern neighbor Ukraine on February 24.

When asked about the suits Oleg Artemyev said every crew chooses their own uniforms. “It became our turn to pick a color. But in fact, we had accumulated a lot of yellow material so we needed to use it. So that’s why we had to wear yellow,” he said.
