Israel Urges US Not to Remove Iran’s IRGC from Terror List

The government of Israel on Friday called on the Biden administration to restrain from any possible decision to remove Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) from its blacklist of foreign terrorists.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid in a joint statement have called on the Biden administration not to remove IRGC from its blacklist, terming the proposed move “an insult to the victims.”

AXIOS citing Israeli and US sources reported on Thursday that the Biden administration is considering removing IRGC from a terror blacklist in return for a public commitment from Iran to de-escalation in the region.

The agreement to restore the 2015 nuclear deal is already complete, according to the sources which said reversing US former President Donald Trump’s decision to designate the IRGC as Foreign Terrorist Organization is a key remaining sticking point.

Bennett and Lapid said that removing the IRGC would be a betrayal by the Biden administration against its allies who have been targeted by the group in the region.

“The Iranian Revolutionary Guards are Hezbollah in Lebanon, they are Islamic Jihad in Gaza, they are the Houthis in Yemen, they are the militias in Iraq,” Bennett and Lapid said.

Bennett and Lapid said that they believe the US will not abandon its closest allies in exchange for “empty promises from terrorists.” The fight against terrorism “is a global one,” a shared mission of the entire world,” they added.

The two officials also said that IRGC was responsible for attacks on US civilians and US forces in the Middle East. “IRGC was behind plans to assassinate senior American government officials,” they added.

Bennett and Lapid furthered that IRGC has killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people in Syria and also they are brutally oppressing their own people (Iranian civilians). They also said that Iran was behind in destroying Lebanon.

Bennett and Lapid both said its hard to believe that IRGC’s designation as a terrorist organization will be removed in exchange for a promise “not to harm Americans.”
