Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke with Turkmen President-elect Serdar Berdymukhamedov on the phone and congratulated him and the people of Turkmenistan on the successful conduct of its presidential elections, vowing to work with the new government in different areas.
Xi told Berdymukhamedov that China-Turkmenistan relations have achieved leapfrog development in recent years, with the two sides having established a strategic partnership and bilateral cooperation in various fields.
Xi assured to continue firmly support Turkmenistan’s internal and foreign policies, and “oppose external interference” in Turkmenistan’s internal affairs.
During the talks, Xi also said that China stands ready to work together with Turkmenistan to build on past achievements to lift bilateral relations to higher levels and jointly build an even “closer China-Turkmenistan community with a shared future.”
The two sides also agreed to continue to promote cooperation in energy, natural gas, and other areas aimed at further improving mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.
During the conversation, Berdymukhamedov hailed bilateral ties with China and said he will continue to firmly pursue the policy of friendly cooperation with China in various fields between the two sides.
The Turkmenistan election commission on Tuesday declared the son of Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov as the winner of the presidential election after a voting-counting delay.
Berdymukhamedov, 40, secured 72.97 percent of votes in Saturday’s election to lead the country and succeed his father Gurbanguly.
