Deltacron Confirmed in Brazil and Israel

Brazil and Israel have confirmed cases of the hybrid Deltacron COVID-19 strain.

Brazil’s Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga confirmed two cases of the Deltacron strain of COVID-19 just after cases were recently detected in France.

“This variant [the Deltacron] is considered of importance and requires monitoring. Everything that happens in other countries, we observe. We monitor all cases, and this is the fruit of the strengthening of the genomic surveillance capacity in Brazil,” said Queiroga.

Israeli national broadcaster Kan reported last Monday that Deltacron has recently been found in swab samples that were sequenced in labs.

The Israeli government however has not confirmed the cases while no exact number of patients were disclosed.

Philippe Colson from IHU Mediterranee Infection in Marseille, France first reported on the emergence of the Deltacron variant last March 8 after it was dismissed to be a rare occurrence before.

“During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, two or more variants have co-circulated during same periods of time and in same geographical areas. This created opportunities for recombination between these two variants,” said Colson.
