Iraqi Female Activist Found Dead in Erbil

Iraqi security officials on Monday said they have found the dead body of a young female social activist in a 100-meter road near Erbil International Airport on Sunday night

Police in Erbil, the capital city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, have identified the victim as Imam Sami Maghdid, a 20-year-old social media activist. The police said they have launched an investigation into the matter.

The police did not disclose any details regarding the perpetrators of the crime, or how she was killed but said an investigation is underway.

On Sunday, Maghdid posted her last video on Tik Tok with a platform of over 47,000 followers.

In the past, many Iraqi female social activists were targeted across the country. In August last year, Reham Yacoub, a doctor, and activist was killed by unidentified gunmen who opened fire on her car.

The incident took place in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, where three other women who were in the car at the time, were also injured.

According to officials, Yacoub had previously received threats against her life when she participated in training courses supervised by the US consulate in Basra in 2017 and 2018.
