Iran Slams Russia For Interfering In Nuclear Talks

The government of Iran on Monday slammed Russia for interfering in the Vienna talks aimed at reviving 2015 Tehran’s nuclear deal, saying Moscow is pursuing its own interest.

Moscow had called on the US to make sure that the current economic sanctions on Moscow due to the Ukraine invasion, must not hurt its trade with Iran.

However, Iranian officials said Moscow is trying to maintain its own interest by demanding such assurance from the US in the wake of sanctions.

Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency cited Iranian officials as saying the Russian demands were “not constructive”.

“By postponing the revival of the agreement and delaying Iran’s return to the oil market, Russia was seeking to raise crude prices and increase its own energy revenue,” Tasnim quoted officials without mentioning names and positions.

This comes as Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia wanted a written US guarantee that Russia’s trade, investment and military-technical cooperation with Iran would not be hindered in any way by the sanctions.

Meanwhile, Iran’s top security official Ali Shamkhani on Monday said that negotiators were evaluating new components that had affected the talks in Vienna.

“Iran was adapting initiatives to accelerate an agreement,” Shamkhani said in a tweet message.

Moreover, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that sanctions imposed on Russia over Ukraine had nothing to do with Vienna talks.

Iran, France, UK, Germany, Russia and China directly and the US indirectly have been engaged in intensive talks in Vienna to salvage Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal, where Iran agreed to reduce its nuclear activities in return for removing sanctions from the US.

However, the deal fell apart after the then US President Donald Trump withdrew from it in 2018, but the incumbent President Joe Biden signaled willingness to rejoin the deal and resume negotiations.
