Spanish Journalist Detained in Poland for Allegedly Spying for Russia

Pablo González, a freelance journalist with Publico and the La Sexta television channel, has been detained in Poland for alleged espionage for Russia.

Stanislaw Zaryn, the director of Poland’s National Security Department, said Internal Security Agency (ABW) officers arrested Gonzalez February 27, in the south-eastern city of Przemysl.

Gonzalez allegedly worked for the Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (GRU) while taking advantage of his journalist status.

“Pablo Gonzalez is accused of an espionage offence… and is in temporary detention at the prison in Rzeszow.He was preparing to travel to Ukraine,” said his lawyer Gonzalo Boye,

González’s wife Oihana Goiriena defended that her husband is only a journalist who us expert in the politics of the post-Soviet space and is doing a doctorate at the University of the Basque Country.

“It is absurd. I still don’t believe it,” said Goiriena.
