Russia Blocks Echo of Moscow and Rain TV

Russian media regulator Roskomnadzor has blocked local media outlets TV Rain,  Echo of Moscow, and other independent news outlets.

“In accordance with the requirement of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, Roskomnadzor sent notifications about the need to restrict access to false information to the resources of Ekho Moskvy, InoSMI, Mediazona, New Times, Dozhd, Svobodnaya Pressa, Krym. Realii, Novaya Gazeta, Journalist, and Lenizdat,” said Roskomnadzor.

According to Roskomnadzor, the independent news outlets published content “with calls for extremist activity, violence”, as well as “deliberately false information regarding the actions of Russian military personnel as part of a special operation to protect the DPR and LPR..”

“This message (material) was created and (or) distributed by a foreign media outlet acting as a foreign agent and (or) a Russian legal entity acting as a foreign agent,” said headers on Rain TV articles.

RFE/RL was also warned by Roskomnadzor but said that they would not comply with orders to remove stories covering the invasion of Ukraine.

“Russian authorities’ restricting of social media platforms and independent media outlets is clear censorship and undermines the free flow of information,” said CPJ Program Director Carlos Martinez de la Serna.
