Tourist Boat in Vietnam Sinks, 13 Dead

A tourist boat capsized on Saturday off the coast of Hoi An, a heritage city in Vietnam, killing 13 people with four others missing.

The vessel was carrying 39 local tourists and crew members, returning to Hoi An from Cu Lao Cham island, and was hit by bad weather.

Local Communist Party chief Nguyen Sinh confirmed 13 people drowned and four were missing. Among the missing were two children, according to a local border guard.

Nguyen told AFP that rescue efforts were suspended in the evening due to the lack of light. “We will resume the search at first light tomorrow morning for the other four people,” he said.

The local border guard noted that the chances of the missing being found alive are small.

Vietnam has recently opened up for domestic tourism in early February after being closed from COVID-related restrictions last year. Hoi An is a popular destination for both local and foreign tourists.
