Yemeni Forces Claim to Shoot Down UAE’s US-Made Drone, Saudi Arabian Aircraft

Yemeni Armed Forces Spokesperson, Brigadier General Yahya Saree on Friday claimed they have intercepted and shot down a US-made drone over the northern al-Jawf province and a Saudi Arabia’s aircraft in Ma’rib province.

“Yemeni air defense forces targeted the US-made General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper drone which was operated by the UAE air force with a surface-to-air missile,” Saree said in a tweet.

In a separate tweet, Saree claimed that Yemeni air defense units had shot down a US-built Boeing Insitu ScanEagle spy drone belonging to the Saudi Arabia’s Air Force.

The attack by Yemenis came just hours after the Suadi Kingdom said its air forces carried at least 15 airstrikes targeting several positions in Harad district in Hajja province in northern Yemen, according to Arabic-language Al-Masirah television network

There were no immediate reports of casualties or extent of damage due to the air assault.

Yemen has been plunged into war since March 2015, where Saudi Arabia, and UAE backed forces have been engaged in the fight against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels who are controlling large swaths of Yemen, including the capital city of Sanaa.

The ongoing war has left hundreds of thousands of Yemenis dead and wounded and also leads to the displacement of millions of people. The two Arabic countries and allies, Saudi and UAE have not commented on the Yemenis claim of bringing down their aircrafts.
