Russian Forces Take Chernobyl as Possible Nuclear Waste Leak Fears Grow

Russian forces have taken control of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone after clashing with Ukrainian troops.

“Russian occupation forces are trying to seize the #Chornobyl_NPP. Our defenders are giving their lives so that the tragedy of 1986 will not be repeated. Reported this to @SwedishPM This is a declaration of war against the whole of Europe,” said Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier today.

An adviser to Ukraine’s interior minister confirmed that the fighting has reached the site of the Chernobyl disaster and that nuclear waste storage facilities may be damaged by the fighting.

A missile strike has also allegedly occurred around the Chernobyl zone, north of Kyiv and west of a major river the actual location has not been confirmed.

Adviser to the Ukrainian presidential office, Mykhailo Podolyak has later claimed that Russian forces have already taken control of the Chernobyl NPP.

“After a completely senseless Russian attack in this direction, it is impossible to say that Chornobyl is safe. This is one of the most serious threats to Europe today. Knowing the habits of Russians, they are probably already preparing provocations at Chornobyl or they will use the damage inflicted during the attack to accuse Ukraine, or they themselves will damage these, obviously, the most dangerous objects,” said Podolyak.
