Italian Ambassador to Australia Francesca Tardioli died after falling off a balcony in her hometown in Foligno in the Umbria region.
Italian media reported on Feb. 20 that Tardioli, 56, was found dead outside of her house where she was spending a few days of vacation.
Tardioli allegedly lost her balance while leaning over her balcony, Italian media reported.
Italian police are investigating Tardioli’s death, according to the reports.
“With infinite sadness, the Farnesina mourns the death of Francesca Tardioli, Ambassador of Italy to Canberra, and joins the grief of her loved ones,” the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said on Twitter.
“We will remember her fondly for her admirable professional and human qualities: a great diplomat and servant of the state,” the ministry further said.
Australian Ambassador to Italy Margaret Twomey described Tardioli’s death as “heartbreaking” and called her “one of Italy’s greatest gifts to Australia.”
Tardioli had served as the Italian Ambassador to Australia since September 2019.
