The Philippine National Police-Intelligence Group (PNP-IG) claimed that they have discovered a Hamas plot to wage a proxy war in the country by recruiting Filipino operatives who will carry out attacks on Israeli citizens.
“Our Filipino source identified the Hamas operative as ‘Bashir’ who was reportedly attempting to establish a foothold in the Philippines with pledges of financial support to some local threat groups including militant extremists with links to the international terrorist organizations,” said IG chief Brig. Gen. Neil Alinsangan.
Bashir was later identified to be Fares Al Shikli, the head of Hamas’ Foreign Liaison Section who has an Interpol red notice and is charged with an Offense of Terrorism Logistics Support.
According to the PNP-IG, the Filipino source met Bashir in Malaysia from 2016 to 2018 to talk about plans to attack Israelis in the country in exchange for financial assistance from Hamas.
PNP-IG however has not announced if they had made an arrest related to the intel or if there were other local groups involved with the plot.
“This is a stern warning to all terroristic groups who plan to conduct recruitment and similar activities in the country, we have a way to know you and you cannot do your plans here,” said Alinsangan.
