Azerbaijan Says Military Positions Attacked by Armenian Forces

The Azerbaijan defense ministry on Thursday said its military positions came under attack by Armenian forces since Wednesday evening.

In a statement, the ministry said the Armenian armed forces units in the Yukhari Shorzha settlement of the Basarkechar region opened fire periodically at the Azerbaijan army positions in the Zeylik settlement of the Kalbajar region.

Relations between the two former Soviet republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan remained tense since 1991 due to border dispute in Nagorno-Karabakh region, both claiming the territory as part of their land.

The report of the latest skirmish comes at a time when the US welcomed Azerbaijan’s release of eight Armenian detainees.

“Efforts to facilitate the return of all remaining detainees and fully account for missing persons, including from the 1990s, are critical to lasting peace in the region,” the United States Mission to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe said in a statement.

The US remains committed to promoting a secure, stable, democratic, prosperous, and peaceful future for the South Caucasus region, it added.
