United States figure skater Nathan Chen set a new world record in the men’s short program at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics on Feb. 8.
Chen, a three-time world champion, earned first place for the program with a score of 113.97, beating the previous record set by two-time defending gold medalist Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan.
Chen’s performance included a quad flip, a triple axel, and a quad lutz-triple toe in combination.
“Last Olympics, both short programs didn’t go the way that I wanted, and finally getting the opportunity to skate the program to the way that I wanted — it feels really great, it means a lot,” Chen told NBC.
With his victory, Chen, 22, takes the five-point lead to the free skate program on Feb. 10.
