A student died and another is in critical condition after a shooting outside a school in Richfield, Minnesota, police said.
According to the police, a shooting occurred at the South Education Center at 12:07 p.m. local time on Feb. 1.
Upon arrival, officers discovered two students had been shot on the sidewalk near the school.
Both students were transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center, but one of them died due to his injuries.
Officers determined that the suspect fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
Officers conducted a sweep of the school and the surrounding area and determined there was no threat.
Superintendent Sandra Lewandowski of Intermediate District 287 said that the 200-student facility was evacuated.
The incident remains under investigation and officers are searching for the suspect.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said he has been briefed on the situation.
“We are coordinating with local law enforcement and have offered the assistance of additional state resources as we continue to gather information,” Walz said in a statement.
