U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Run for Reelection

United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Jan. 25 that she is running for reelection.

“I am running for reelection to Congress and respectfully seek your support. I’d be greatly honored by it and grateful for it,” Pelosi said in a video announcement on Twitter.

Pelosi listed core Democratic issues, such as creating middle-class union jobs, addressing the climate crisis, and preventing gun violence, as reasons for her to seek another term in the House of Representatives.

However, the 81-year-old Democrat from California did not notably announce that she will run for speaker.

Pelosi previously said that she will not run for speaker for 2022.

Pelosi is currently serving her 18th two-year term in Congress.

Pelosi’s announcement for reelection comes as record numbers of House Democrats announced their retirement at the end of their term.

Pelosi was first elected to the House in a 1987 special election and became the first woman to lead a political party in Congress as a House Minority leader in 2003.

In 2006, Pelosi became the first female speaker in the U.S.
