Actress Ivory Aquino to Play First Trans Character in a DC Comics Feature Film

Transgender actress Ivory Aquino has joined the cast of the upcoming “Batgirl” movie to play the first ever transgender character in a live-action DC Comics feature film.

Aquino has been cast to play Alysia Yeoh, the best friend of Batgirl, also known as Barbara Gordon, in the HBO Max feature film.

The casting first sparked speculation when Leslie Grace, who plays Batgirl, posted a photo on Instagram featuring the two of them seemingly on set with the caption, “Barbara and Alysia.”

Yeoh first appeared in a 2011 issue of “Batgirl,” becoming the first major transgender character in a DC comic book.

Born and raised in the Philippines, Aquino moved to the United States in her teens and underwent gender confirmation surgery at the age of 26.

Aquino is widely known for her role as transgender activist Cecilia Chung in the 2017 miniseries, “When We Rise.”

Aquino, who is the niece of former Philippine President Corazon Aquino, also appeared in the 2019 film, “Lingua Franca,” and the 2019 miniseries, “When They See Us.”
