‘Mighty Ducks’: Josh Duhamel Set as New Male Lead in Disney+ Series

Josh Duhamel has joined the cast of the TV sequel series to The Mighty Ducks and will portray a new role in the second season of the show, filling the hole left by Emilio Estevez’s departure.

Duhamel will play Gavin Cole, a former NHL player-turned-coach who is regarded as inspirational, charming, and tough because he believes in the hockey metaphor for life. He is the head of the super-intense summer hockey academy where the Mighty Ducks will spend the second season.

The actor joins season one stars Lauren Graham and Brady Noon on the cast.

Estevez, the former Mighty Ducks franchise’s face, left Game Changers in November due to a contract dispute with Disney’s ABC Signature. The company had requested that all performers and those working in Zone A on the show adhere to a COVID vaccination obligation. While the actor and his representatives refused to offer assurances that he would comply, the studio chose not to renew his contract for season two, continuing the plot without his favorite instructor, Gordon Bombay. Estevez denied being an “anti-vaxxer” and blamed his departure on artistic disagreements.

Season two’s showrunners are Cathy Yupa and Josh Goldsmith (13 Going on 30: The King of Queens), who co-created the series with Steven Brill from the film. James Griffiths and Michael Spiller executive produce, with the former directing many episodes. Graham will co-produce with Brillstein Entertainment Partners’ George Heller and Brad Petrigala, and Jordan Kerner will also co-produce. Spiller and Griffiths will not be back for Season 2.

Among Duhamel’s credits are Netflix’s Jupiter’s Legacy and NBC’s upcoming limited series The Thing About Pam, in which he co-stars with Renee Zellweger. On the movie front, he has Lionsgate’s Shotgun Wedding, starring Jennifer Lopez, due out in June. ICM, John Carrabino Management, and Hansen Jacobson represent him.
