The U.S. State Department on Sunday evening ordered staff for Ukraine, telling U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to Ukraine due to increasing unrest.ned fears of a Russian invasion.
The State Department also authorized voluntary departures of U.S. government employees in Kyiv, while their family members were directly ordered to leave Ukraine, the U.S. Embassy said.
Officials from the State Department said that the move was made out of an “abundance of caution”, reassuring that the threat to U.S. personnel has not increased.
The U.S. embassy warned in a statement that “military action by Russia could come at any time and the United States government will not be in a position to evacuate American citizens in such a contingency, so U.S. citizens currently present in Ukraine should plan accordingly.”
The U.S. had also issued the highest-level travel advisory for Ukraine, telling U.S. citizens to avoid travelling to Ukraine due to increasing unrest.
“The security conditions, particularly along Ukraine’s borders, in Russia-occupied Crimea, and in Russia-controlled eastern Ukraine, are unpredictable and can deteriorate with little notice,” said the U.S. Embassy, adding that protests in Kyiv have become violent.
State officials said that it will continue its defense support to Ukraine, warning that the consequences to Russia will be severe if it chooses to attack.
