The metropolitan government of Tokyo confirmed 9,699 daily coronavirus cases on Friday, setting a new record high for the third day in a row as the highly transmissible Omicron variant spreads rapidly across Japan.
Government officials said about half of the 9,699 new patients were vaccinated, 25% unvaccinated, and 25% unknown vaccination status.
Officials added that the number of COVID-19 patients with severe symptoms increased to 11 from nine on Thursday, but no report yet of COVID-19 fatality in the Japanese capital.
New COVID-19cases also hit record highs in Ishikawa Prefecture, central Japan, at 229, and Aichi Prefecture, in central Japan, at 3,187.
The northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido logged at least 1,600 new cases and marked a record high for the third consecutive day.
Meanwhile, the Osaka prefectural government said the number of daily COVID-19 cases in the western Japan prefecture would likely increase to a total of 6,200, hitting a fresh record high.
