UK Sends Anti-Tank Weapons to Defend Ukraine

The United Kingdom is supplying Ukraine with anti-tank weapons for self-defense after Russia sent around 100,000 troops to the Ukrainian border, UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said.

“I can today confirm to the House that, in light of the increasingly threatening behavior from Russia, and in addition to our current support, the UK is providing a new security assistance package to increase Ukraine’s defensive capabilities,” Wallace told the House of Commons.

According to Wallace, the UK government sent the first batch of light, anti-armor weapons to Ukraine on Jan. 17, without specifying what type.

“Let me be clear: this support is for short-range, and clearly defensive weapons capabilities; they are not strategic weapons and pose no threat to Russia,” Wallace said.

Wallace also said that “a small number” of UK troops will provide training to Ukrainian forces.

Wallace further said that “a package of international sanctions” is also ready to go to punish Russia if it takes “any destabilizing action” in Ukraine.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said on Twitter that Ukraine “highly appreciates” UK’s decision.

“I am profoundly grateful to the people and the government of the UK for robust security assistance,” Reznikov said.

Intelligence services have suggested that a Russian invasion or incursion could happen some time in early 2022.

Russia has demanded Ukraine to never become a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), an intergovernmental military alliance.

Russia also accused member states of NATO of “pumping” Ukraine with weapons.
