Czechoslovakia has convicted its first citizen for COVID-19 disinformation on Friday.
According to court documents, Jana Peterková allegedly posted a false message claiming that some seniors died in a nursing home in Měšice after vaccination.
Reports also said that Peterková allegedly published an interview with a former employee of the nursing home, V. Vondráčková, claiming the ‘mainstream media’ were ‘silent’ when several elderly people died after receiving a Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.
The municipality of Měšice denied all the accusations.
“Citizens should refer to official sources for information and avoid spreading unsubstantiated information or false rumors, as these may cause fear and public alarm,” a local police spokesperson said.
Prague Morning media outlet reported that Peterková was asked to publish an official public apology on her social networks and website, to pay a financial compensation of about US$11,700 (CZK 250,000 crowns), and to cover the costs of the proceedings.
