A laboratory study published in the Journal of Nature Products titled “Cannabinoids Block Cellular Entry of SARS-CoV-2 and the Emerging Variants,” has shown that cannabis can prevent infection from the virus that causes Covid-19 by blocking its entry into cells.
According to researchers affiliated with Oregon State University, two compounds commonly found in the hemp plant called cannabigerolic acid, or CBGA, and cannabidiolic acid, or CBDA had the potential to combat coronavirus.
The study however did not involve giving the supplements to people or infection rates.
“Orally bioavailable and with a long history of safe human use, these cannabinoids, isolated or in hemp extracts, have the potential to prevent as well as treat infection by SARS-CoV-2,” said the researchers.
Another similar study was conducted by the University of Waterloo titled “Cannabidiol and the anti-viral response to SARS-CoV-2 proteins.”
The Waterloo study revealed that CBD increases the cell’s response to several key proteins produced by the coronavirus genome and could stop an infection, or slow its transmission to others.
“They do this by activating innate responses inside of cells, which form the first line of defense. In the case of COVID-19, however, this response isn’t very good, which has contributed to high infection rates,” explained Waterloo lead researcher Rob Duncan.
