46% of COVID-19 Tests in the Philippines Positive

The Health Department (DOH) in the Philippines said the COVID-19 positivity rate in the country reached 46% on Monday, a record-high for the sixth straight day.

Health officials said four out of ten people who have undergone the COVID-19 test were found positive.

“This is really high. At this level, our testing is having a difficult time. It’s being strained and we’re starting to lose visibility of the pandemic situation,” said Guido David, a fellow from an independent polling, research and consultation firm, OCTA Research Group.

On Wednesday, the country has reported the highest coronavirus record with 208,164 cases, surpassing the 203,710 cases reported during the surge in April 2021.

Of the new cases, the DOH said over half came from Metro Manila, followed by Calabarzon and then Central Luzon.

With infections continuing to spike and more than half of the beds in intensive care units occupied, anticipation was building that the government would soon impose new restrictions.
