Myanmar Junta Jails Celebrities for Supporting Protests

The Myanmar junta has jailed three celebrities for three years each for participating in protests against their coup.

Actor couple Pyay Ti Oo, and Eaindra Kyaw Zin. along with actor-director Lu Min were each given three-year sentences after being charged under a section of the penal code that outlaws the spreading of dissent.

Author Than Myint Aung, and actor and model, Paing Takhon were also sentenced to three years in prison for incitement last Monday.

Than, Pyay, Paing, and Eaindra were all arrested along with 3,000 people last April during a mass crackdown on pro-democracy figures.

The sentenced celebrities were all sent to Yangon’s Insein Prison where they would spend the duration of their sentence along with hard labor.

The Myanmar junta has not yet commented on the sentences.
