The Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Vietnam is now rescheduled to May 2022 after being postponed earlier this year due to a surge in the country’s COVID-19 cases.
The regional sporting event was first scheduled for Nov. 21 to Dec. 2 in Hanoi and 11 other provinces in Vietnam, but was canceled in July after COVID-19 cases have increased tenfold to 23,000.
Vietnam’s Olympic Committee announced on Nov. 5 that the SEA Games will now roll from May 12 to 23, citing that the decision was made by Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam.
The new schedule for the Games will not coincide with other major sporting events, the committee added. It will also give Vietnam’s neighbor Cambodia enough time to prepare for the next SEA Games that will commence in May 2023.
Vietnam has reportedly allocated a budget of around $69 million for the SEA Games as it is expected to invite about 20,000 participants, 7,000 of them athletes from 11 countries.
