US Forces Left Ain al-Assad Air Base In Iraq: Official

Top Iraqi military official announced on Monday that the US forces have withdrawn from Ain al-Assad air base in Al Anbar province.

Head of the Joint Operations Command of the Iraqi army, Major General Tahsin al-Khafaji said that only advisory forces have remained in the base.

The news of US troops withdrawal will be officially announced on December 31, Tahsin al-Khafaji.

Iraq Military Spokesman, Brigadier General Yahya Rasool on Saturday said Ain al-Assad base is now under control of the Iraqi army.

“Many of the headquarters at the base are completely evacuated from foreign troops,” Rasool said, while some headquarters are used to deliver logistical equipment to Iraqi forces.

This comes as recently Robert McGurk, the CENTCOM chief, said that the role of the US forces would change from combat to training and advising.
