UN Chief Designates Singaporean Sociologist as New Myanmar Special Envoy

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Sociologist Noeleen Heyzer of Singapore, as his new Myanmar Special Envoy on Monday.

“I will take on this role on Dec 13, and I look forward to listening to the aspirations and perspectives of all stakeholders in the hope of a peaceful political solution in the country for a better future for all the people of Myanmar,” Heyzer told CNA.

Heyzer, a former senior UN diplomat, would replace Christine Schraner Burgener, who finishes up this weekend after more than three years in the role.

The United Nations and ASEAN have urged the military junta to relaunch political dialogue and liberate civilian officials arrested since the February coup in Myanmar, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Burgener and appointed emissary in August, Erywan Yusof, were not able to go to Myanmar to meet with civilians and former leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

“I hope that the international community will not give up. We should stand with the people,” Burgener said.
