Teenage U.S. Open Tennis Champion Emma Raducanu Wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2021

Teenage tennis player Emma Raducanu wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year following her United States Open win earlier this year.

“It’s such an honor just to be amongst these nominees, to win,” Raducanu, now 19, said as she received the award while in quarantine in Abu Dhabi where is recovering from COVID-19.

Winning the award by public vote, Raducanu became the first female tennis player to receive the award since 1977 when Virginia Wade won.

With a 6-4 6-3 victory, Raducanu became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam at the U.S. Open in September, becoming the youngest women’s Grand Slam champion at the age of 18 since Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2004.

Raducanu also became the youngest Briton to win a Grand Slam title and the first woman to win the U.S. Open without dropping a set since Serena Williams in 2014.

Raducanu’s U.S. Open championship followed reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon in July, becoming the youngest British woman to reach the Wimbledon last 16 in the Open era.

Raducanu finished the year ranked 19th in the world, a great jump from 343rd place at the beginning of 2021.
