Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, Son of Former Libyan Dictator, Runs for President

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, one of the sons of former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, has registered his nomination for the country’s first direct presidential elections on Dec. 24.

The High National Election Commission confirmed that Saif registered as a presidential candidate in the southern city of Sebha.

However, it is not yet known if he will be allowed to stand.

The militia captured Saif at the end of his father’s brutal crackdown on protesters in 2011. He was held for six years and received a death sentence, which was later overturned.

Saif is still wanted by the International Criminal Court on war crime charges.

There would also be renewed attempts to arrest him if he publicly appeared in Tripoli for his connections to Russian paramilitary organization, Wagner Group.
