Queen Elizabeth II has canceled the annual pre-Christmas family lunch due to the surge in COVID-19 cases in the United Kingdom caused by the Omicron variant.
According to a palace source, going through with the Christmas lunch would jeopardize other people’s holiday plans at risk as well.
Elizabeth was scheduled to host at least 50 relatives including Prince Charles and Camilla at Windsor Castle next week before she would be flown off to Sandringham where she would celebrate Christmas eve.
This is the second year that the Christmas lunch has been canceled.
More than 78,000 people have already tested positive for Covid yesterday while England’s chief medical officer Prof Chris Whitty warned that more numbers would be recorded in the coming weeks.
Whitty explained that the large surge was caused by two separate epidemics, one by the “very rapidly-growing” Omicron variant and the other by the Delta variant.
“I’m afraid we have to be realistic that records will be broken a lot over the next few weeks as the rates continue to go up,” said Whitty.
