Pfizer-BioNTech Asked Health Canada to Approve the First COVID-19 Vaccine for Children

Pfizer-BioNTech submitted a request to Health Canada to approve COVID-19 vaccines for children aged five to 11 years old.

Health Canada has released a statement saying that they will be prioritizing the request while making sure that it won’t neglect its commitment to safety, efficacy, and quality in the highest regard.

Once Health Canada consents, the shots will be administered to children, but the regulators must curate doses fit to the children’s needs.

Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam described the formulation as “next-generation” and would therefore need the regulators to test the vaccine.

Health Canada said, “Studies with the Comirnaty vaccine are ongoing in children less than 5 years of age, and other manufacturers are also testing their vaccines in children of various age ranges. Health Canada expects to receive data for review in the coming months.”
