Moderna to Mass Produce mRNA Vaccines in Australia

US drugmaker Moderna has agreed to set up one of its biggest manufacturing facilities in Australia.

Michael Azrak, head of Moderna in Australia, said he was proud Moderna would have an Australian manufacturing presence.

“We’re ready to pitch tent in Australia,” Azrak said.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the Moderna plant in Victoria state would produce up to 100 million mRNA vaccine doses every year when it begins operations in 2024.

The new plant would also manufacture shots tailored for other illnesses like the seasonal flu.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said producing the said vaccines in Australia would significantly advance the country’s medical manufacturing capability.

“Ensuring Moderna has a manufacturing presence here will deliver Australia priority access to products manufactured here in Australia, by Australians, for Australians, using the most cutting-edge vaccination science available in the world today,” Hunt said, adding that they are eager to finalize the agreements with Moderna soon.
