Merkel Becomes Caretaker Chancellor

Former German Chancellor Angela received her formal dismissal certificate after 16 years in office, but she will oversee a caretaker government until her successor is sworn in.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier presented Merkel with her dismissal certificate, thanking her for guiding the country through challenging circumstances, notably during her final four-year tenure.

Merkel had previously attended the inaugural session of Germany’s new parliament in Berlin, where she sat in the VIP gallery as the newly elected members gathered for the first time.

Merkel, who was elected to the Bundestag for the first time 31 years ago, did not run again in the September 26 election.

Merkel’s likely successor would be Social Democrat Vice-Chancellor and Finance Minister Olaf Scholz, who has served as her vice-chancellor and finance minister since 2018.

Merkel has already bid goodbye to other European Union leaders and former US President Barack Obama last week.

In her last weeks as caretaker, Merkel will represent Germany at the G-20 summit in Italy and the UN climate conference in Glasgow next week.
