The film “Eternals” grossed $71 million in its domestic premiere, the fourth-highest opening since the pandemic.
After the Eternals debut, Disney’s Marvel now has three of the top four film opening weekends in the United States.
Despite being on the top, “Eternals'” earnings are among the lowest in the franchise. The most recent picture to launch to a lower total was 2015′s “Ant-Man,” which earned $57.2 million in its theatrical debut.
Eternals was hailed for its varied cast, but critics thought the diversity wasn’t enough to compensate for an overloaded storyline and little character development.
Globally, the latest MCU entry earned $161.7 million, the second-highest global weekend for a Motion Picture Association film in 2021, trailing only Universal’s “F9.”
“Eternals” has already debuted in significant areas such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, South Korea, and Australia, but it has yet to be released in China, which has one of the highest-grossing international box offices.
