‘Journal for Jordan’ Writer, Producer on Using “Vigilance, Reverence and Respect” to Bring True Story to Big Screen

Todd Black, the producer of A Journal for Jordan, first read Dana Canedy’s memoir of love, loss, and family, on which the film is based, nearly 15 years ago.

Before the film could go into production, it took years of script work, interrupted by other projects, and the addition of screenwriter Virgil Williams and star Michael B. Jordan.

Both the film and Canedy’s book of the same name tell the story of her romance with First Sgt. Charles King and his lessons for his young son, born in 2006, as shared in a journal written by King before his death in Iraq later that year.

The film, which was released in theaters on Christmas Day, also fulfills a promise that both Black and Washington made to Canedy: that the film would be made for her and her son during their lifetime.
