Japan Culls 143 Chickens Amid Avian Flu Outbreak

Bird flu has been identified at a poultry farm in Akita prefecture in northern Japan.

According to the prefectural administration, over 143,000 hens will be killed after avian flu was identified in 12 of 13 birds examined at the farm in the Yokote area.

According to the article, the prefectural administration has also prohibited exports of chickens or eggs from farms within a 10-kilometer (6.21-mile) radius of the afflicted farm, and troops from the Self-Defense Forces have been deployed to assist in resolving the matter.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has also called for information collecting and has urged the agricultural ministry and other government agencies to collaborate closely in order to take comprehensive preventive measures as soon as possible, according to the report.
