Suspected ISIS militants have attacked a village in eastern Diyala province, Iraq, and killed at least 15 people.
Iraqi security officials said the ISIS attack occurred in the predominantly Shia village of al Rashad northeast of Baqouba in Diyala province last Tuesday.
Firas al-Azzawi, a media representative for Diyala health department said that 15 were killed after international media earlier reported that there were 11 while 17 more villagers were wounded.
According to Iraqi police, the militants were carrying automatic weapons and were onboard vehicles while all of the victims were unarmed civilians.
“The Miqdadiya crime will not go unpunished. Their heinous crimes strengthen our determination to uproot them from Mesopotamia,” said Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.
ISIS has not yet claimed responsibility for the attack but has been increasing its activities in the area during the recent months.
