Iran Confirms First Case of Omicron Variant

Iranian health authorities have confirmed the detection of the country’s first case of Omicron COVID-19 variant in a man returning from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Iran’s Deputy Health Minister, Kamal Heidari said that the patient is a middle-aged man from Tehran and that two more suspected cases for the Omicron variant are under investigation.

“Three weeks after the World Health Organization (WHO) expressed concern over the omicron variant that emerged first in South Africa before reaching Europe, today we also identified the first case of it,” Heidari said, adding the infected man and those in his contacts were quarantined.

Iran is among the worst-hit countries by the COVID-19 pandemic, in which 6.1 million Iranian people were infected with another 131,083 people losing their lives to the virus.
