House Democrats Move to Formally Censure Representative Paul Gosar Over Violent Anime Video

House Democrats announced on Nov. 10 that they plan to formally censure Republican Representative Paul Gosar for posting an edited anime video that depicted him attacking Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and President Joe Biden.

In a statement, the Democratic lawmakers said they plan to introduce a resolution on Nov. 12, calling the video Gosar uploaded on his official social media accounts “a clear cut for censure.”

“For that Member to post such a video on his official Instagram account and use his official congressional resources in the House of Representatives to further violence against elected officials goes beyond the pale,” the lawmakers said.

The lawmakers cited the Jan. 6 Capitol riot to state that “such vicious and vulgar messaging can and does foment actual violence.”

The lawmakers also pointed out violence against women in making the case against Gosar.

“Violence against women in politics is a global phenomenon meant to silence women and discourage them from seeking positions of authority and participating in public life, with women of color disproportionately impacted,” the lawmakers said.

The lawmakers also called out Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, describing his “silence” as “tacit approval and just as dangerous.”

Censure, which requires a floor vote and a simple majority to pass, is considered the harshest form of punishment in the House after expulsion.

The 90-second video, which is now unavailable on Instagram and Twitter, was an altered version of the opening credits of the Japanese anime series, “Attack on Titan.” It appeared to portray Gosar as one of the heroes wielding two swords to kill a giant that had Ocasio-Cortez’s face and to attack another character with Biden’s face.

The video also prompted the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee to call for an ethics investigation.
