Gas Tanker Explosion Kills 50 in Haiti

At least 50 people have died after a fuel tanker truck exploded in the city of Cap-Haitien.

“It was my gut that was shattered when I learned of the great tragedy in Cap-Haïtien, where the explosion of a gas truck took the lives of more than 40 people in the area of Lafòsèt. I bowed low to the families of the victims. I share the pain and sorrow of all the people around Cap,” said Former Haitian Prime Minister Joseph.

Cap-Haitien deputy mayor Patrick Almonor said that the tanker truck flipped over and spilled its fuel after losing control.

Residents and bystanders reportedly tried to scoop the spilled fuel off the ground before an explosion occurred.

Footage from the scene after the explosion has shown large plumes of flames erupting from where the truck flipped.

Le Nouvelliste reported that the death toll has already been raised to 50 and that Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced three days of national mourning.

There are no details yet on what caused the accident or the identities of those who were killed.
