Former United States President Donald Trump and his Trump Organization have filed a lawsuit against New York Attorney General Letitia James, seeking to block her ongoing civil tax fraud investigation into his company.
The lawsuit filed on Dec. 20 seeks a federal court order declaring that James has violated Trump’s constitutional rights and blocking James’ investigation, as well as her involvement with Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance’s office on a criminal investigation into the Trump Organization.
In the lawsuit, Trump accuses James of having “exploited” her investigatory powers to target her political opponents and to advance her career.
“Her mission is guided solely by political animus and a desire to harass, intimidate, and retaliate against a private citizen who she views as a political opponent,” the lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of New York, said.
The lawsuit came less than two weeks after James indicated that Trump could be questioned under oath next month as part of the long-running investigation into claims that Trump had inflated the value of his assets to banks when seeking loans.
In a statement, James said the investigation will continue “undeterred.”
“No one is above the law, not even someone with the name Trump,” James said.
