Suspected jihadist militants killed at least 41 members of the homeland defense volunteers (VDP) in the northern Loroum province.
Local media reported that the VDP was ambushed while they were escorting a convoy of traders escorted near Ouahigouya.
“In this painful circumstance and as a tribute to the valiant VDP and civilians who fell in defense of the homeland, the president of Burkina Faso decrees a national mourning period of 48 hours, starting Sunday,” said government spokesperson Alkassoum Maiga.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks but al-Qaida and Islamic State militants have conducted massacres and attacks in the Sahel region recently.
