An official from the Seongnam Development Corporation (SDC) allegedly involved in choosing the developer implicated in a corruption scandal was found dead on Tuesday in an apparent suicide amid a probe into the corruption-ridden development project.
Seongnam police said SDC’s deputy director of development Kim Moon-ki, was reported missing by his family on Tuesday.
Police later found Kim lifeless in his office at Seongnam Development Corporation on the same day.
According to reports, Kim played a role in removing from the project contract a clause that would allow the city government to recoup excessive development profits from private investors.
In October, police and prosecution questioned Kim as a witness over whether Yoo Dong-gyu, former acting president of the company, ordered the deletion of the controversial clause in the contract.
Yoo was arrested and indicted earlier for bribery and breach of trust.
Kim was the second person to die in connection with the scandal, following the death of Yoo Han-gi, former director of the SDC development division early December.
